If you’re married, you’ll have made promises/vows to your spouse. Do you remember what they were? Have you lived up to them perfectly? Mine to Nikki are quoted below and I’m sure that I haven’t because I’m far from a perfect husband.

Marriage is given to us as a vivid picture of the relationship between Jesus and his church and this is why it’s so important.

The promises that we’ll be looking at on Sunday are – at least on face value – very different to the promises we make to each other in a marriage ceremony. For example, in one, Jesus is promised to be crushed for our sins. That sounds awful, doesn’t it?

But when you think about it, Jesus giving his life for others is an incredible picture of love. After all, wouldn’t I give my life for my wife, or for my kids? Of course I would.

There’ll be so much more about this on Sunday – please watch/listen if you can and let me know what you think.

I, James, take you, Nikki,
to be my wife,
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part;
according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.
